Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

A haircut can run you and arm and a leg these days, which is why student or assistant salon cuts are such a godsend. Salon professionals have to spend hours and hours perfecting different kinds of cuts, so they need a lot of willing clients. In short, you trade your time (and head of hair) for the service. Typically, an instructor will watch over the student performing your cut or color; most appointments ring in under $40. Click through for the details on how to get in at 14 local salons and beauty schools, including some really big fish (Sally Hershberger!).
