Solid State Studios Brings Its Custom Shoe Game to LA

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

When we first peeked into LACAUSA's Silver Lake brick-and-mortar last year, one of the items (besides the brand's signature sheer tanks and dresses) we most coveted was a custom-made calf hair slide by Chicago-based brand Solid State Studios. And we must not have been the only ones, as the shoes sold out quickly and shop owner Rebecca Grenell tells us the various versions she's stocked since have continued to be best-sellers.

Solid State has also created runs for Christy Dawn's Venice shop and collaborated with Day Space Night and Giu Giu, so it's appeal to the LA fashion scene seems cemented. And now that the brand's creator Julio Chavez has officially moved operations from Chicago's Pilsen hood to his native Los Angeles, we're thinking we'll be seeing his cool, custom-made slip-ons, slides, sandals, and bags all over LA's best-dressed ladies.

Chavez just signed a lease on a Chinatown studio, which he'll share with buds BfgfOla Onda, and illustrator Paul Windle. While you wait to head into the new space (which will have stylish neighbors like Tuesday Bassen and Building Block), you can shop Solid State's handmade goods online and at LACAUSA's store, and keep updated via Instagram here, where Julio keeps us intrigued with new releases and experimental new projects (those fuzzy slides tho).
