Adorn Your Bag With These Space Age Charms

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

LA-based, Jenny Lewis-approved bag and accessories line Welcome Companions is known for turning out the cheekiest, cutest new ideas ever, from toast-shaped crossbody bags to navy leather mouse ears (in barrette form). The company’s surrealist perception is a reflection of owner Laurel Broughton’s unique worldview and totally fabulous, fearless fashion sense. It’s no wonder that socially aware celebrities like Lena Dunham have embraced the brand, in all its quirky, thoughtful glory.

We’re no stranger to WC’s adorable charms; Laurel’s collection of leather popsicles and fried eggs are the perfect way to add some novelty, humor, and fun to a basic bag. On the idea of injecting fashion with fun, Laurel tells us, “I think it’s what keeps us alive and in enriching and surprising relationships with the world around us. Hopefully Welcome Companions add to that.”

Unsurprisingly, her latest collection (called “Space Time”) is full of pop culture nods and irreverence, entirely based around the premise of space travel and comprised of moon-shaped totes, rocket accessories, and these shiny metallic ringed planet and star charms — so perfect against a simple black leather bag. Available in two color combinations (blue or red) for $70, the set is total perfection, but for a pared down look, you can buy the star and planet individually for $40 (the star is also available in gold). WC is taking pre-orders now for August delivery, and since they’re made in limited quantities, we’d suggest jumping on it.
