Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We all laughed together when Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph donned unflattering denim in a fictional commercial for "Mom Jeans" on Saturday Night Live back in 2003. If you would have told us then that 13 years later, the high-rise, tapered-leg style would be worn by the most influential style stars, we would have called you insane. And yet, here we are.
And now yet another "Normcore" (yup, that's a thing), '90s-inspired trend has reemerged, and this one's just as much pulled from your parents's closet. "Dad hats" have been spotted on fashion elite including Rihanna, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Gigi Hadid. What exactly is a dad hat, you might ask? Not to be confused with a trucker cap or snapback style, this baseball hat has a much more relaxed fit, without looking too lived-in. Basically it should look like something your dad got for free at a company picnic or picked up in a souvenir shop on a family vaycay in the '90s.
If you'd like to experiment with the style, be like RiRi and try a monochromatic look (this all black style was sick) or just integrate it into your California-casual vibe — mom jeans optional. We've gone ahead and found a few to get you started, including one courtesy of Queen Bey herself. You know once Beyoncé signs off on a trend it's totally legit.
