Target’s Swanky Store Renovations Highlight LA Talents

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Target is the mass retailer that everyone loves to, well, really really love: From collabing with cult-fave designers and fashionable beauty brands to cementing its go-to status in pretty much all of the life departments, the affordable big box chain is all about pleasing the people. It's now honing in on its LA shoppers as part of its LA25 revamp, a new concept that the megaretailer is rolling out at 25 SoCal stores this month.

The Minneapolis-based company walked us through its swanky renovations yesterday during a press tour (can we always shop with a personal guide?), and we found that the new layouts target (ha!) healthy eaters and even the most self-sufficient shoppers. New additions include self-checkout stations, a more streamlined Order Pickup area (formerly called Guest Services), healthier food options (they're adding Which Which, Freshii, and Pizza Hut Artisan), and department store-inspired athletic wear and home furnishings areas, to name a few.

Target's also gone all indie on us, adding merch from independent LA businesses like Coolhaus, PF Candle Co., and more. The retailer's also partnering with local jewelry designer Michelle Chang, whose charming accoutrements is now available at LA25 stores.
