Casey Carlson, the mastermind and model known on Instagram as Officially Quigley knows a thing or two about taking lush, rich photographs and parlaying her relationships with designers, photographers, and tastemakers into collaborations that further her brand. In the new age of Insta fame, Quigley is quickly on the rise, with labels like Nasty Gal clamoring to work with her and a new generation of aspiring muses following her every move.
Part of her charm is her absolutely unique, identifiable look, typically topped off with a large hat from Gladys Tamez Millinery (for whom she modeled), a dark matte lipstick, ombré hair, and a floaty, ethereal vibe to her photos that make you want to not only be her, but be where she is and wear what she's wearing. And really, isn't that the trick? We sat down with Casey to get a little more info on what goes into styling a shoot, what beauty products she can't live without, and how to have a successful Insta account.
What are you favorite shopping destinations in LA?
I absolutely love flea markets. On any given Sunday in LA, there's a very high chance you will run into me perusing the racks of vintage at either the Melrose Trading Post or the Pasadena Rose Bowl. It's my happy place. If you live in LA and you haven't been to one or both, you need to change that. Like, yesterday.
Who are your style icons?
Who do you hang out with in LA?
I spend most of my time with my fiance, Alex, and our children, Rex, Meatball, and Lucy (two cats and a dog). The four of them make me a super happy lady. My best friend, Nikia, runs MadMavenStyle. We have collaborated on tons of content and I am super lucky to have her in my life! My sister lives up in Oakland and I try and visit her often. She owns a letterpress company called People I've Loved. She has always been a huge inspiration to me!
What goes into putting an outfit together?
Well, it obviously must have a hat. I love mixing prints. A good stripe and floral combo is what I live for. I also am really into pairing vintage finds with modern pieces.
What are your favorite beauty products?
For my hair, Aveda Phomollient styling foam and Not Your Mother's dry shampoo. For my face, Anastasia Brow Powder Duo and Clear Gel, Benetint cheek and lip stain and Benefit Watt's Up highlighter, NARS Sin/Casino Duo (it's a bronzer and blush, but I use the blush as an eyeshadow) and always MAC matte lipstick in either Lady Danger, Chili, Diva, Ruby Woo, or Smoked Purple.
For my body, I use Laura Mercier Crème de Pistache body butter and Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Abricot Eau de Toilette, plus I swear by certain drug stores items, including True Match by L'Oreal foundation and Maybelline Volum' Express Colossal Mascara.
Any tips for someone who wants to start a great Instagram page?
Knock down every door! If there is someone you admire and want to work with, ask! Work hard, and stay consistent. Also, be okay with doing favors. You never know when that one-off job that didn't pay anything leads to a huge campaign or opportunity.
What’s your go-to Sunday morning outfit?
T-shirt dresses. When I'm not on a shoot, I live in a variety of huge striped tees that go down practically to my knees. Mumu's are also a go-to. Sports bras, sports bras, sports bras. Sunday is comfort day!
