Inside Lily Ashwell's Dreamy New(ish) Venice Digs

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Clothing designer Lily Ashwell has been quietly operating her very first brick-and-mortar for over six months now, but since she's recently signed on to keep the Venice space for at least the next few years, it seemed like a good time to make it official.

Ashwell (whose mom Rachel is the interior design force behind Shabby Chic) is an LA native, though she spends a good deal of time in London, where she also attended Central Saint Martin's for fashion design. It was during school that she became enamored of vintage Victorian dresses and turn-of-the-century workwear, which may explain some of her collection's staples: slip dresses, sheer blouses, and the best-selling overalls—which are decidedly feminine but with a modern viewpoint. And all of Ashwell's pieces are both designed and made right here in Los Angeles with incredible attention to fabric choices and figure-flattering fits. We also learned exclusively that the store will soon add custom bridal services utilizing an upcoming capsule collection of gowns.

Her adorable digs on Rose Avenue—flanked by cacti and other plantlife—also showcases a wealth of curated housewares like Big Sur sourced ceramics, natural beauty products like Herbivore and Earth Tu Face, artsy books, and even a handful of vintage pieces.

You can visit the sweet shop Monday-Friday from 11am-7pm, or on weekends from 10am-6pm.
