Production Accountant Sophie Carpenter Attributes Her Cool Style to Travelling

Welcome to Style Crush, a new biweekly feature that shines a light on LA's best-dressed rising stars.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Glassell Park-based cutie Sophie Carpenter certainly doesn't look like your typical number-cruncher, but the Finley, Washington-born production accountant is quick to remind us that that's because she's not. As she jokingly says, "People say, 'You must love math!' But I don't! I just love money!"

One especially beneficial perk of Carpenter's job (at the moment she's working on a yet-to-be-named TV show) is getting chunks of time off for travel, which she does with musician husband Isaac, who currently drums for Awolnation. Trips to Paris, Hawaii, Tulum, and Italy, as well a journey up the East coast and into Canada with the band, have contributed greatly to her wardrobe. On a typical day her ensemble likely features vintage and unique finds she's scooped up along the way.

Recently we had the pleasure of learning a bit more about Carpenter, including the garment her husband just doesn't understand, her go-to gift shopping spot in Atwater Village, and the Broad City babe she's crushing on.

Tell us about your outfit:

My jean jacket is vintage, and my husband and I have shared it for about 14 years. He sewed the arms to fit better. I accidentally left it in Montreal over the summer and we were devastated but it found its way back to me. My dress is from Asos and top is from Urban Outfitters. My shoes are from a vintage store in Richmond, Virginia. My kerchief is from a vintage store in Paris and the bag is Mansur Gavriel from Jenni Kayne. Aside from my wedding ring, my rings are from Arrow and Anchor Antiques. It's owned by a friend who is a private dealer and she does pop-ups all over the country. Oh, and the sunglasses are by Karen Walker.

Describe your style in three words:

Pop, Minimal, Classic.

What LA boutique is your happy place?

Individual Medley in Atwater Village is my go to gift store. The people there are so nice and will always wrap my things for me which I am terrible at. For vintage clothes, I love Painted Bird in Silver Lake. Their stuff is priced so well that its always changing and I never leave that store without something. I also love the General Store in Venice, but I don't get over to the West side that often.

What fashion item are you obsessed with buying right now?

I have yet to meet a jumper I didn't want. I have a growing collection, much to my husbands dismay.

What are you currently on the hunt for?

I am on a lifelong quest for the perfect high-waisted skinny jeans. I also need some new summer sandals because I always destroy mine.

Who's your style crush?

Alexa Chung, Sofia Coppola, St. Vincent, Michelle Williams and Ilana Glazer.
