Fall in Los Angeles is unlike fall anywhere else. While other cities are busy busting out hefty jackets in preparation for the season's chilly change, Angelenos welcome the subtle breeze with lightweight layers and cozy essentials, never facing the need to completely stow away swimwear or cutoff shorts.
To mark the first official day of fall, we present our first-ever fashion editorial, featuring nine essential buys from LA brands that are all shoppable at local retailers. From the model-off-duty uniform you need to pick up at Anine Bing on West 3rd, to the chillest sweatpants ever at TenOverSix on Melrose, consider this a solid starting point for your seasonal closet revamp.
THE FOREVER SWEATER

Shaina Mote "Juno" sweater, $422. Available at TenOverSix (8425 Melrose Avenue; 323-330-9355).
You know that goes-with-everything sweater that you find yourself reaching for during the slightest temperature drop? We're calling this The Forever Sweater. It's warm, it's soft, it's timeless, it's always a good idea. We recommend pairing Shaina Mote's ribbed pullover with the all-important cropped flare for a play on proportions.
THE BOLERO HAT

Janessa Leone "Gabrielle" wool felt bolero, $165; Reformation "Rochelle" dress, $98. Available at Reformation (8253 Melrose Avenue; 323-852-0005).
If summer was fedora season, fall is all about the bolero. Forbes favorite Janessa Leone offers a great option with an extra-wide brim, perfect for warding off excessive wind trying to mess with your good under-hat hair day. (Rude.)
THE NEUTRALS
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078094/IMG_1037.0.jpg)
LACAUSA "Loft" dress, $141; Vere Verto "Mini Mox" bag, $322; Mondo Mondo "Sun" ring, $240. Available at LACAUSA (4015 Sunset Boulevard; 703-582-4396).
Just like all-pumpkin-everything and the holidays, earth tones and fall go hand in hand. Reach for soft hues like beige, blush, camel, and nude, and be sure to keep your makeup just as natural to get the look right.
THE COMFORT HEEL
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4087272/IMG_1097.0.jpg)
Charlotte Stone "Morely" mules in brick; $220. Available at Myrtle (2213 Sunset Boulevard; 213-413-0004).
While a good pair of booties are vital this season (see below), this is also a good time to invest in the perfect comfort shoe to wear when you want to look relaxed yet polished. Mule slides are easy to slip on and offer a great break for your poor soles that suffered through single strap sandals all summer long.
THE COOL-GIRL UNIFORM
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078010/IMG_1016.0.jpg)
Anine Bing fringe jacket in suede, $1199; Anine Bing distressed v-neck T-shirt, $119; Anine Bing jeans with high slit, $199; Anine Bing "Bianca" boots, $699. Available at Anine Bing (8128 West 3rd Street; 323-424-3165).
When you just can't be bothered with dwelling on what to wear, a foolproof outfit works wonders on your stress levels. A badass jacket, loose white tee, skinny jeans, and killer boots have been a model-off-duty staples for years, and lucky for us, you don't actually have to be a model to pull it off. (Keep this set on heavy rotation, trust.)
THE NON-DENIM OVERALL
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078652/IMG_0856.0.jpg)
Reformation "Fella" surplus fabric overall, $218. Available at Reformation (8253 Melrose Avenue; 323-852-0005).
While denim overalls were most definitely a warm-weather hit, salute the season's shift with a pair of fabric overalls from the cool kids over at Reformation. We dig the mustard hue of these and the fact that they're made of surplus stretch twill, aka body-flattering magic. Pair yours with a long-sleeved crop-top that casually falls off the shoulders.
THE EASY ESSENTIALS
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078048/IMG_0964.0.jpg)
Jesse Kamm "Boxer" top, $310; Calder Blake "Cocteau" pant, $142. Available at TenOverSix (8425 Melrose Avenue; 323-330-9355).
As we slowly begin to approach the holidays, your couch is looking more and more like the place to be—especially when family is in town. Lazy days call for cool home clothes that also work in the great outdoors, like this clean and simple pairing from two of our city's top cult-favorite talents.
THE CONVERSATION PIECE
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078656/IMG_1089.0.jpg)
Jujumade "Sliced Cluster" necklace, $175; John & Mickie "Jill" dress, $258. Available at Myrtle (2213 Sunset Boulevard; 213-413-0004).
Since layers add more volume to your look, dainty jewelry may get lost in the shuffle, which is why we're bringing back the chunky necklace. Get creative and make your own, or if you share our lack of DIY skills, opt for a ready-made masterpiece like this one.
THE SIXTIES MOMENT
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/4078654/IMG_0998.0.jpg)
Rebecca Minkoff "Alyson" dress, $348; Cult Gaia "Gaia's Ark" bamboo bag, $45; Crap Eyewear "No Wave" sunglasses, $56. Available at Satine (8134 West 3rd Street; 323-655-2142).
Any retro fanatic knows that Jane Birkin never ceased to serve stellar fall style. Until it's time to whip out that utility trench, settle for a sleeveless version with a fun lace-up front. A clever nod to Birkin's signature wicker basket comes in the form of this geometric bamboo bag, which is guaranteed to become Instagram bait at your next fall picnic.
