Do You Care About LA Swim Week?

LA Swim Week

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

At the end of each year, we ask LA's top influencers if our city really needs a Fashion Week. While the majority offer a hard "nay" (blogger Jayne Min of Stop It Right Now says that "LA as a city and LA's fashion is relaxed and casual, it doesn't need glitz and glamour and the whole circus"), some local experts believe that there should be some type of showcase here, but not in the traditional runway format. Perhaps our city should focus on one strong, LA-centric fashion category—like swimwear? If so, then LA's upcoming Swim Week just might work.

Taking place tomorrow July 23rd, we already like that the showcase will be located at only one venue—The London West Hollywood hotel—instead of the dizzying amount of locations that LAFW directs attendees to. One slight bummer about LA Swim Week is its talent roster; it would have been great to see some big-name local swimwear designers in the mix, like Minimale Animale, Wildfox Swim, Lee + Lani, and Mikoh, all of which maintain a strong presence at Miami Swim Week.

Maybe this is only the beginning and more locally-bred, globally recognized talents will get involved in the future. If you're interested in seeing what LASW is about, $50 general admission tickets and $100 VIP tickets are available here.
