Mel and Kelcey Ayer Are a Cool, Effortless Power Couple

Welcome to Style Crush, a new biweekly feature that shines a light on LA's best-dressed rising stars.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

When we initially approached freelance writer and content creator Melanie (Mel) Caselas Ayer as our Style Crush, she jokingly—and modestly—suggested we instead feature her husband Kelcey, insisting that he was the true clotheshorse of the two. Given that Kelcey is a vocalist and keyboardist for LA favorites Local Natives, and two stylish folks are better than one, we decided to feature them (and their cute Husky pup Tasha) as a package deal.

As a couple, these two have a rep for being crush-worthy; after meeting via MySpace in 2008, their cute love story even won them a rad free wedding in an online contest. When we caught up with Mel and Kelcey near their Los Feliz residence during the sun-drenched Independence Day weekend, the duo were expertly decked out in the kind of cool, comfortable gear (both had enviable sunnies) that's always harder to nail than it seems. They gave us the scoop on where they get their goods and what they're lusting after next.

Tell us about your outfit:

Mel: My top is from Topshop, and my jeans are Madewell. I wear a LOT of Madewell. I love how timeless their pieces are. I got the chambray from one of my favorite vintage shops on Etsy called A Glass Jar. It's a husband and wife team based in LA and they always have such cute stuff. My sandals are by Veranda and I got them from Anthropologie. This watch is by Void and the sunglasses are some cheap vintage knock-offs. I don't like spending a lot on sunglasses!

Kelcey: I got my shirt from Mohawk General Store, and it's made by Alexander Yamaguchi, a designer I'm really into right now. All of his stuff is really simple, but just feels really special. There's always some subtly unique aspect to his pieces. The pants are old Levi's that have reflector stripes when you cuff the pant legs, which I unsuccessfully tried to cover with permanent-marker. The shoes are vintage Levi's hi-top sneakers I found at a thrift store in Denver, the hat is made of fancy paper by Kijima Takayuki, and the sunglasses are Garrett Leight.

Describe your style in three words:

Mel: Effortless. Timeless. Cool. I always ask Kelcey, "Is this cool or is this weird?" We both like things that ride that line.

Kelcey: Unique, strange, and subtle. Subtle has been more of a recent thing actually, I used to dress like a maniac. As I grow older though, I feel like it's better to keep the maniac inside, rather than outside. Keep the people guessing.

What LA boutique is your happy place?

Mel: I could spend all day at Individual Medley in Atwater. I also love the vintage finds at Mixed Business.

Kelcey: Mohawk General Store is my rock; I find more awesome stuff in there than any place I've ever been to, LA or elsewhere. Unfortunately it has completely ruined thrift stores for me. There's just no comparison between someone's old shirt and an awesome fitting Our Legacy button-up shirt... if I look like a million bucks, it's cause I'm broke (but happy).

What fashion item are you obsessed with buying right now?

Mel: Boxy tees, crop tops, and solid colors. I have so many prints in my closet. I think we're both wanting to mellow out.

Kelcey: Short-sleeved anything. I'm hot all the time.

What are you currently on the hunt for?

Mel: Cool sneakers. We rescued our pup at the end of last year, so I'm walking the neighborhood so much more now. I want to find some really comfortable (and stylish) shoes to slip on in the mornings.
Kelcey: A hat with a brim that's simple and timeless but is not a fedora. No fedoras!

Who's your style crush?

Mel: Alexa Chung. She has the best hair.

Kelcey: Uh, I have no crushes (shut up man, my wife is here).
