A Lesson in Leather Crafting at LA's Twig & Twine

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The next best thing to buying one of Toni designer Toni Truong's luxe (for less!) leather handbags or accessories is having the Texas-bred, LA-dwelling lady—and may we add leather expert—guide you through creating one of your own. Last Friday we tipped you off to the latest in her series of workshops, which have previously resulted in goods such as moccasins, card holders, and sunglasses cases made by the often novice hands of attendees.

Toni invited us to crash her course at sweet floral boutique and frequent creative workshop space Twig & Twine (716 N Virgil Ave) where she gave us a tutorial on creating our very own leather envelope clutch, from using a pattern to cut our individual piece of raw leather to customizing it with stamping tools, embroidery, and dyes. All the necessary tools were provided (including mimosas!) and Toni made sure we all managed to complete a finished product we could be proud of. Sign up for for the newsletter here for keep up with all Toni's events if you'd like to try your hand at a unique leather creation of your own.
