Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
ATWATER VILLAGE—What if the selfies we share on social media said a little more about us than our #OOTD or the fact that we're feeling like our eyebrows are particularly on fleek? What if a camera could instead snap the essence of your soul? Well that's exactly what Christina Lonsdale, better known as Radiant Human, is attempting with her traveling "aura photography" pop-ups. With enormously successful past stops at Otherwild and downtown's Ace Hotel, Lonsdale and her energy vibration-sensing camera will be returning to another of her LA spots (she divides her time between our great city, Taos, and Portland), Individual Medley (3176 Glendale Boulevard), Saturday and Sunday from 12-7pm. For $25 guests (first come first serve!) can sit for a portrait unlike any other—revealing a cloud of colors around you that corresponds to the energy you emit. LA's cool set is always lining up for these events, so aim for an early arrival.
ARTS DISTRICT—With hip neighbors like Hammer and Spear and One Santa Fe, new Arts District addition Knives Out Salon (941 E 2nd Street, #104) is right at home on the creative stretch. Though owner Christine Choi has quietly been taking appointments in the space, this Saturday she will be throwing an official opening bash. From 5-8pm you're invited to scope out the industrial-yet-warm locale and impressive list of services (balayage, extensions, and treatments, oh my!), enjoy sweets from Matchbox Kitchen, sample Asian skincare products from new beauty company Beautybi (think Birchbox but with products exclusively from Taiwan, Japan, and Korea!), enter to win a gift card for LA's raddest manicurist Nail Swag, and shop cute throw pillows with a mini pop-up from Stitch and Rose. And of course no celebration would be complete without music and cocktails. Let's welcome this sweet new spot with a bang!
SANTA MONICA—A premier name in champagne, Veuve Clicquot is currently touring the country (with a trademark yellow-hued trailer in tow!) to surprise cities with pop-up parties that feature the bubbles. This Friday, the truck makes a stop at SaMo hotspot Shore Bar (112 W Channel Road) to treat guests from 8-11pm with festivities including gourmet popcorn, live DJ tunes, a photobooth, and their classic Yellow Label champs and Non-Vintage Rose available for purchase by-the-glass. RVSP for this effervescent soiree by calling the bar at 310-429-1851.
