Advocates of uncovered shoulders, here's another rising local label to add to your eternally fest-ready wardrobe. Meet Roe + May, a Long Beach-based brand that crafts budget-friendly bohemian essentials that can go from the coast to the city.
Founded by Katie Welty Fraser and Jackie Loughery, the just-launched brand's debut spring collection ($38 to $248) is comprised of lacy loungewear, bell-sleeved silk dresses, breezy eyelet cotton tops, sexy floral maxi dresses, and more. We got to know the rising brand's Long Beach-based designers to find out the story behind Roe + May's name, which pieces they'll be living in all summer, where they go to find inspo, and more.
How did you two meet?
Katie and Jackie: We were introduced to one another by a mutual best friend in junior high. It wasn't until we attended Long Beach Wilson High where our friendship grew closer. Although we went to different colleges, Katie at USC and Jackie at USD, we always remained good friends and in close contact. Jackie moved to Hawaii for a few years and once she returned home to Long Beach, we created Roe + May and have been inseparable ever since!
What inspired you to create the brand?
Katie and Jackie: After traveling the world and living in Southern California, San Francisco and Hawaii between the two of us, we wanted to create a feminine, effortless collection that would translate from the beach to the city—a timeless collection that was both chic and affordable that could be packed in a suitcase and taken anywhere around the world.
We wanted to give young women the option to wear beautiful clothing at an affordable price, whether that would be wearing the Santorini cover-up to the beach, the Marbella top to a date night in the city or the Bordeaux maxi while traveling around Europe. The versatility and affordability of the line is what makes it stand out in a crowd.
What's the story behind the brand's name?
Katie and Jackie: Our brand name is very close to our heart. The names Roe and May are a combination of our late grandmothers's names. Both of our grandmothers had exquisite sense of style and we both were greatly influenced by them growing up.
Who or what are your design muses?
Katie and Jackie: We naturally gravitate toward a refined bohemian vibe and get a lot of design inspiration from the Southern California beach lifestyle as well as the '70s decade. We get really inspired by both high fashion runway shows and women's street style in Europe! Isabel Marant and Chloé are some of our favorite brands.
Which of your pieces will you be wearing all summer?
Katie and Jackie: Our go-to piece this summer will be our Bordeaux maxi. It can be styled with sneakers for a more causal look and or dressed up with heels for any summer wedding. We also love the Crispino top—it's the perfect top to wear with jean shorts during the day or jeans and booties at night!
Where do you go to shop, relax, and find inspiration?
Jackie: I find a lot of inspiration from my time in Hawaii. I lived on Oahu for several years and adopted the island lifestyle and culture. You will see a lot of this beachy lifestyle in our collection pieces.
Katie: I have a more refined sense of style; I love high-end fashion and I get inspired by everything from wedding gowns, to vintage dresses and fabrics, to women's street style in Paris. Blending both of our design aesthetic creates a beautiful refined bohemian collection that can be worn by girls everywhere.
