Rick Caruso cannot be stopped. Amid working on major makeovers in Pacific Palisades and Brentwood, the Caruso Affiliated founder and real estate rockstar has just entered into agreement to purchase Glendale's historic Masonic Temple, a nine-story Art Deco tower at 232-236 South Brand Boulevard that was designed in 1927 by architect Arthur G. Lindley and owned by Frank DePietro and Sons. Conveniently located across from Caruso's Americana at Brand shopping center, he plans to transform the tower and adjacent buildings into a "creative office space, repurposing it into a mixed-use venue that also will incorporate retail and restaurant space," notes the official press release.
"We are glad to extend our presence in Glendale through a project that truly offers a prime example of adaptive reuse," stated Rick Caruso, founder and CEO of Caruso Affiliated. "This is a local architectural gem. The prospect of reinvigorating it, preserving its architectural history while providing the community additional modern office space and several new social hangouts is exciting."
Given that Caruso plans to honor the Temple's history through preservation, Glendale is quite pleased with the acquisition. "With the phenomenal success of The Americana at Brand, I'm confident that Rick Caruso will bring the same vision to this project." says Scott Ochoa, Glendale City Manager. "I'm excited to see the Temple return it to its vibrancy, and to become both a business and hospitality asset to the city of Glendale."
We hear that this deal has been five years in the making, so we're curious to see what Caruso has been eager to create in this whopping 68,000-square-foot space on 38,000 square feet of land. What shops would you like to see here?
