Thanks to Buzzfeed and the rest of the web's black holes documenting celebrity face surgery disasters, Botox and cosmetic treatments continue to fascinate us. Even our gorgeous K-Town tour guide swears by the power of the needle, which is why we've asked Skin Care Clinic Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon Dr. John Diaz to fill us in (sorry!) on the beauty-enhancing procedure.
In addition to sharing his expertise in front of cameras and in print, the expert injector has just released Honor MD, his own line of medical-grade anti-aging products. Below, we've picked Diaz's brain to find out the next big thing in cosmetic surgery, the average age of his Botox clients, if he's ever turned down a potential customer, and more.
What do you think the next big cosmetic procedure will be?
The next big cosmetic procedure will be a non-invasive and non-surgical way to dramatically rejuvenate the face. Recent technological advances have provided us with new treatments to reduce fat without surgery. Lifting the face without surgery is the new frontier.
What's the latest advancement in cosmetic surgery you're most excited about?
I am most excited about cryoliposis, or "CoolSculpting." Although it is non surgical, it is revolutionizing the way we look at fat reduction techniques.
What's the average age of your Botox customers?
Late 20's to early 30's and beyond.
How often do you get men seeking cosmetic treatments?
We have seen a consistent rise in the number of men getting both non-surgical and surgical treatments. More and more men are getting Botox and other non-surgical services. In addition, procedures like rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and liposuction are becoming increasingly popular and common among men.
What's the most surprising fact about people who get Botox?
What is most surprising about people who get Botox is just how common it is across all demographic groups. I treat everyone from models, actors, and CEOs to waitresses, secretaries, and teachers. Surprisingly, there is still somewhat of a stigma associated with getting Botox, even though there shouldn't be. To give you an idea of just how many people are getting Botox, recent data according to plasticsurgery.org shows that there were 6.3 million injections in 2013 alone!
Have you ever refused to do work on a patient?
Yes. Good candidates for surgery must have realistic expectations and be mentally and emotionally stable. If I believe a patient is seeking surgery while in an unstable life situation or if the patient has unrealistic expectations of what the surgery will achieve, then they will not be approved to have surgery.
What do you recommend to potential patients who you feel are too young for Botox or other procedures?
If I believe a patient is too young to get Botox or other procedures, then I recommend other options. For example, medical grade retinol or prescription tretinoin are great topical treatments to prevent fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture. Mild peels and other minor resurfacing treatments also help with preventing fine lines and improving skin tone and texture. These are fantastic options for someone who is not a good candidate for Botox because of their age or their preference.
What are your top tips for preventative care?
I have four great tips for preventative skin care. First, make sure to consistently use high quality, medical grade skin care products. A good skin care regimen that includes antioxidants, peptides, and retinol will go a long way in preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Second, make sure to avoid excessive sun exposure. Use a good sunscreen with a high SPF every day to achieve this. Third, exercise regularly. This will keep you fit and looking young.
Lastly, eat a balanced diet. You'll provide your body and skin with the nutrients it needs and prevent excess weight gain that will inevitably make you look older.
What's the most effective and quick way to get youthful results without going under the knife?
The most effective and quick way to get youthful results without going under the knife is to use a combination of Botox, dermal fillers, non-invasive fat reduction and non-invasive skin tightening. Botox and dermal fillers will smooth out and fill in deep lines and wrinkles. Non-invasive fat reduction, like CoolSculpting, will remove extra fat from trouble areas. Non-invasive skin tightening, like Ultherapy, will make a subtle improvement in the appearance of loose skin around the lower face and neck.
