Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
LONG BEACH—Recently we rounded up some of the city's most stylish NYE bashes to help you get your evening's plans on track, but if you're still searching for a music-filled fete for you and your friends, consider the annual Downtown Long Beach Block Party (200 Pine Avenue) on Thursday. The three stages of the three-block festival will welcome local acts like Saint Motel—whose indie rock hit "My Type" has been in heavy rotation—and Xia Xia Technique, the new endeavor from OK Go's Tim Norwind and Dan Konopka, as well as some out-of-state friends like Indiana's folksy outfit Houndmouth. Get your $40 presale tickets for the 8pm event by heading here, where you can also check out the full lineup.
PALM SPRINGS—We're so often jaunting over to The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs (701 E Palm Canyon Drive), it feels like the trendy staycation spot is right in our own backyard—yet far enough to feel like a legit getaway. For that reason, we think it's NYE festivities on Thursday seem especially appealing. Flood Magazine, Spaceland, and Desert Daze sponsor the end-of-year activities at the hotel, which include sets from Thee Oh Sees, He's My Brother She's My Sister and Slipping Into Darkness. Tickets for the 8pm event start at just $25 and include a champagne toast at midnight. And as if we needed to tell you, the hotel's amenities include the area's most happening pool deck, a photobooth, and a tasty spot to grab brunch the following morning (or just do room service, depending on your hangover level).
