Although we already known how Downtown's The Bloc will look when it unveils its shiny new facade, it's not a bad idea to document the bricked behemoth's progress as it happens so we can fully appreciate its fancy facelift when it debuts this October. The '70s-built mixed-use complex is currently undergoing its $160 million makeover—which will transform the former Macy's Plaza into an open-air shopping and entertainment hub—so we swung by the DTLA development for a quick pulse check on construction.
So far, the mural-covered mall's directory will include SF-based menswear fave Wingtip, cool bookstore &Pens, Alamo Drafthouse Theatre, and a "retail gallery concept" brought to us by the cool creators of Arts District shops Apolis and Alchemy Works. A few of The Bloc's tenants (Macy's, Express, and LA Fitness, to name a few) are open for business during construction; in the meantime, take a peek at the current state of things below.
