LA-based label Flynn Skye is known for its breezy, boho-cool pieces made for Cali's laid-back lifestyle—so it comes as a surprise that its founder, Amber Farr, is an international transplant. Born in England, the Venice-based designer moved with her family to Malibu at the age of five, which is why "I don't talk funny," she jokes. A natural athlete, Farr was previously a pro snowboarder and competed in equestrian vaulting before opening her own boutique, Blonde, on Main Street in Santa Monica.
After packing up her shop, Farr was tapped by her friend and Planet Blue founder Ling-Su Chinn to design a line for the boho retailer. "I have no idea why she picked me," says Farr. "I never went to [fashion] school, I had no design background whatsoever." Armed with an intuition for what people want, the business-savvy mother of two created the successful Blu Moon label. Eventually, Farr decided to start her own line, Flynn Skye, which takes its name and inspiration from her daughter.
Now going into its third year, the made-in-LA label will soon launch its Bitch's Basics line, 13-piece collection of wear-anywhere items, "like a V-neck top or the perfect black dress," says Farr. On top of that, the designer is also partnering with Dress For Success for an upcoming project to benefit the non profit organization.
We caught up with Farr over tea at Abbot Kinney's Kreation Cafe to find out more about her inspirations, what superpower she wishes she had, and much more.
What are you drinking today?
I'm really into ginger tea. I've been making it at home—It's so good in the morning! You just put on a kettle, chop a couple pieces of fresh ginger, add lemon. I have honey that comes in the honeycomb, it's so good. It's how I hydrate.
What's your favorite color?
Green. Everything good is green.
What's your least-favorite veggie?
Celery. It has no point in life. Cilantro and celery can go away.
Who or what's the inspiration behind the label?
[My daughter] Flynn encompasses the brand because she's the ultimate free spirit. She'll put on a skirt and pull it up as a tube top—she's just so cool, she does things her way. I kind of adore Poppy Delevigne; she's just adorable.
Do you prefer the snow, water, or desert?
Water. [I love] Point Dume.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
So morning. I usually get up at 6. People call me at 9 to go to dinner and I'm already in bed.
Who's your pop music guilty pleasure right now?
Taylor Swift. My daughter listens to her!
If you could have a chat with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
Maya Angelou. Someone who's that wise—I'd just want to sit and listen to what she has to say.
What's your favorite shopping haunt right now?
I like to go to the Malibu Country Mart. It's like my old 'hood. It looks nothing like when I lived there.
What superpower do you wish you had and why?
I would love to see into the future. I would know that I was making the right decisions.
Sneakers or stilettos?
Sneakers. I buy stilettos to look at but I wear sneakers. I love my Céline slip-ons right now.
Knott's Berry Farm or Disneyland?
Disneyland. I just went with about 10 adults and Flynn. I cried on the Dumbo ride.
Biggest regret?
Maybe not pursuing more of an education just because I sound like an asshole. I'm always like, "What's that word? Is it 'coarse' or 'course'?"
