We're sad to report that Original Cult founder and CEO Drew Bernstein, who built a fashion empire on channeling misfit style, passed away yesterday. Born and raised in LA, Bernstein founded goth- and punk-inspired line Lip Service in 1985 and relocated the label's headquarters three years later to Downtown, where he went on to create cult fave brands Kill City, 24 HRS and Widow.
He opened (and later closed) Lip Service boutiques on Hollywood Boulevard and the edgy stretch of Melrose Avenue, and in 2008 debuted a Kill City flagship shop on the street's trendier stretch just west of Fairfax. Our hearts go out to Bernstein's loved ones and the Original Cult family during this difficult time.
