Welcome to Beach Reads, a new summer feature where we ask staffers from LA's best bookstores to pick three of the season's top page-turners.
The third installment of our Beach Reads series brings us to Diesel, A Bookstore at Brentwood Country Mart. A favorite of designers like Karen Kane, this westside book mecca features a wide selection of offbeat stories and creative gifts. There's also a heaping amount of eclectic summer text on deck.
From a "must-read thriller" to a "taut psychological mystery," read on for a roundup of the bookstore staff's favorite picks. Be sure to swing by Monday-Friday from 10am to 8pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
My Struggle: Book One by Karl Ove Knausgaard:
"Steadily absorbing, lit up by pages of startling insight and harrowing honesty, My Struggle introduces into world literature a singular character and immerses us in his fascinating 'Underground Man' consciousness."
The Heist by Daniel Silva:
"Elegant, sophisticated, and entertaining, The Heist is a must-read thriller. It's a page-turning tale of intrigue that demonstrates once again why Daniel Silva is called a 'world-class practitioner of spy fiction.'"
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart:
"A taut psychological mystery marked by an air of uneasy disorientation. The ultimate reveal is shocking both for its tragedy and for the how-could-I-have-not-suspected-that? feeling it leaves us with. But we did''t, which is Lockhart's commendable triumph."
