Nordstrom at The Grove is clearly where it's at these days. Following the mega department store's highly-anticipated SJP launch earlier this month, next week they're set to host British luxury shoe and accessories designer Charlotte Olympia Dellal's "Purrrfect" pop-up shop. The cat-themed space will feature a limited-edition range of the footwear star's bestselling Kitty flats in bright new colorways ($495), plus an exclusive wedge ($895).
In anticipation of her meet-and-greet in the Salon Shoes department (first floor) on Tuesday, March 25 from 6 to 8pm, Dellal sat down with us to discuss the meteoric rise of her female smoking slipper and her longtime fascination with LA's legendary screen sirens.
We hear that you're a Los Angeles superfan.
"I have only been to LA three times but it has quickly become one of my favorite destinations. The essence of Charlotte Olympia derives from my love of old Hollywood glamour so naturally, it is a very special place to me."
What first sparked your idea to create the now-iconic Kitty flat?
"The Kitty flats were designed for my Agatha Christie-inspired fall 2011 collection entitled 'To Die For'. I wanted to create my own version of a men's smoking slipper, as typically worn in those times. I turned the high cut vamp into the shape of ears and instead of a monogram, embroidered a cat's face. The idea was to translate a traditional and typically masculine design into something more feminine, delicate and flirty, like a cat! The Kitty is now part the permanent Encore collection and available at Nordstrom in an array of exclusive colors."
Who was the last person you saw wearing the flat that excited you?
"I love woman to choose shoes that make them smile and feel special. I enjoy seeing women wearing my brand and am also enchanted to see little girls wear the Kitty flats that were launched last year as part of my Incy collection. It was particularly special to see my grandmother wearing them."
We adore your Beverly Hills store. Any exclusives we should know about?
"My Beverly Hills store launched with the 'Hollywoodland' collection that celebrated iconic landmarks, leading ladies and rising stars from a bygone era. The Walk of Fame clutch bag is unique to my LA store and can be personalized!"
Where do you like to eat and play in LA?
"For restaurants, I like the Fountain Coffee Shop at the Beverly Hills Hotel (for breakfast, always!) and Shutters on the Beach is great for light food and a view of the sea. I love the dream and cliché of LA, which for me is a nostalgia for Old Hollywood; on my first visit I had to go and see the Hollywood sign and visit Rita Hayworth's star. I also enjoyed the Max Factor Museum; I love the Art Deco style of the building itself and the original Max Factor makeup rooms."
You have such a cool, vintage look. What movies or stars from the past keep you inspired?
"The 1940s and '50s are bygone eras that play a huge part on the sensibility of the brand. I'm particularly inspired by movie stars and pin-ups. Rita Hayworth is a favorite."
Do you have any other fun projects coming up?
"I am excited to be launching the '9 till 5' collection in June; it include classic silhouettes with modern details to glide you through your working day in lower heel heights. I will also be launching my first collection of leather bags in the Fall which is something I have always wanted to do and been working on for a while. They are named after some of old Hollywoods leading men; who wouldn't want to walk around with Bogart or Brando on their arm!"
