Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Luxe jewelry line Mason Stanley is all about paying homage to Cali's laid-back lifestyle with a whimsical edge. Founded by Venice-based designers Brooke Taylor and Jessica Michie just last year, the line's currently stocked at essential boutique Roseark (did you fall for them at that V-Day trunk show?) and has already charmed bad girl RiRi with its delicate, diamond-encrusted debut collection.

Made right here in LA from solid 14k rose, yellow and white gold, the uber luxe brand's first collection includes pretty (and pricey) pieces inspired by our cool coastal culture, like this skinny bermuda ring ($460) this shark bite ring ($950), this harpoon-shaped wrap bangle ($2,700) and Rihanna's fave iced-out double harpoon ring (3,100). We had a chat with the new label's designers, who left corporate America to pursue their love for creating jewelry. See more from the line and read on after the jump.

With experience in the advertising, fine art and tech worlds, what inspired to get into jewelry design?
"Both of us come from a background in corporate America (which is where we met 10 years ago) and throughout the years we've always lamented our need for a much more creative outlet and a business of our own. After living on the East Coast for a number of years we both moved back to California a few years back and were really inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit we found here.

We have both always loved jewelry, collecting it on our travels, and even finding inspiration from our own family—Brooke's mom has an amazing collection of heirloom jewelry and Jess' grandma as hand casted her own jewelry for years. We felt like it was the space we wanted to get into, and that there was really a lack of fine jewelry that was both wearable and timeless which is what we set out to create."

What was it like seeing Rihanna wearing your ring?
"Honestly we were like, 'Holy f***!' We were seriously so thrilled. When we first started the business we talked a lot about the types of people we hoped would wear our jewelry, and even created a bit of a celeb wishlist—and Rihanna was right on top of that list. So for her to be one of the first celebs to support us and wear the jewelry was more than we could have ever asked for."

Can you share more about the inspiration for your first collection?
"The inspiration for the Bermuda Collection all stems from California and the unique landscape it represents. We wanted our designs to echo the life we live here, rooted in nature, so a lot of the inspiration comes from the ocean and mountains and limitless backdrop you find in our home state.

We also wanted the line to really match up to our California lifestyle, pieces you never want to take off—you can feel comfortable wearing them with a T shirt and sneakers during the day or dressed up for a night out. We don't really feel like any of what we design is seasonal, they are investment pieces we wear year-round to elevate whatever we have on. In that vein we're constantly being inspired and creating new designs, and our plan is to slowly rollout pieces throughout the year."
