Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
On October 16, our fourth annual Racked Awards gala celebration is taking place in NYC, where we'll toast our country's best and brightest retail stars. Instead of unveiling LA's winners on the day of the party like last year, this time around we'll announce one winner daily for the next ten days leading up the party.
Though local gents have scored a slew of stylish new shopping options this year (SF's Unionmade, Austin's STAG Provisions, GANT Ruggers's second LA outpost), there are still plenty of dudes who suffer from retail therapy anxiety. When e-tailer Bonobos's first City of Angels Guideshop arrived earlier this spring, LA's most stressed and time-pressed gents exhaled a collective sigh of relief.
Located at menswear mecca District La Brea, the 1,500-square-foot "brotique" allows customers to feel and try on the brand's styles in a personalized fitting experience. Shoppers then place their orders online via in-store Macbooks, and their merch arrives straight to their doorsteps in a matter of days. In addition to enjoying ice-cold beer throughout the whole process, guys can also take before-and-after photos of their looks; Bonobos describes it as "a modern-day version of what Cher Horowitz from Clueless did with Polaroids when vetting outfits."
