Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Whether you're a serious athlete, seasonal adventure-seeker or fair-weather fitness fan, chances are that you've stepped inside a Sport Chalet. But the just-opened Sport Chalet at Downtown's very active FIGat7th shopping and dining center isn't your average sporting goods supplier—this spot's educational approach aims to help you shop like a pro.
Unlike other Sport Chalet locations (there are over 50 across Cali, Arizona, Nevada and Utah), this location is a modest 26,800 square feet versus the retailer's average 42,000-square-foot format. But also unlike other locations, this Gensler-designed specialty store includes an Expert Center equipped with weekly hands-on clinics to help shoppers learn more about their desired sport and how to handle equipment properly, eliminating the need to YouTube a random tutorial. (We've all done it.)
After perusing aisles of cycling, camping, surfing, scuba, baseball and basketball gear (on-site iPads allow you to order from other Sport Chalet shops if your item isn't available), explore the store's fitness apparel, footwear and sunnies from brands like Nike, The North Face, Roxy, Adidas, Quiksilver, Columbia, Ray-Ban and more. Stop by Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 9:30pm and Saturday from 9am to 9pm.
