Malibu Country Mart's been making steady waves lately. The seaside shopping destination just added Cali-cool brand Michael Stars to its directory and edgy UK retailer AllSaints is doing a year-long stint until next May. Now, bohemian basics boutique Babakul (French for "hippie") is the latest to move into the beachy 'hood.
Founded by former True Religion co-owner Kym Gold with friend and business partner Sophie Wizmann, the brand's sophomore location was a no-brainer for the Malibu native. Compared to the label's flagship store at Fred Segal SaMo, Gold tells us their MCM abode "is truly a little gem which enables us to showcase our collection in a more intimate space."
Acclaimed furniture designer John Housmand gave the boutique a natural woods-meets-modern steel vibe, complete with antiques and decor from around the globe. Shoppers can expect luxe day-to-night wardrobe staples like flowy tops, comfy shorts, super-soft jersey tees and accessories inspired by the coastal city's chill lifestyle, and it's no wonder that famous fans include no-fuss celebs like Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson.
Now that she's back on her home turf, Gold let us in on her fave spots around town. "Nobu is my go-to twice a week, and John's Garden has been an absolute favorite," she tells us.
What does the future look like for Babakul? Expect a third shop at OC's Fashion Island (where cult-fave Aussie swimwear label Seafolly is also headed) sometime in September.
