Peplum to Punk: LA Style Stars Name 2013's Worst Trends

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Just like last year, we've tapped a handful of reputable fashion friends to weigh in on 2013's greatest hits (and misses). We've already named LA's best shops, brands, dream stores, buyer's remorse, purchases and 'hoods. Now, we're asking folks to speak up on their least favorite trends.

Richard Wainwright, A Current Affair co-founder: "Peplum—it was rarely done right."

Sonja Rasula, Unique LA founder: "High-top sneakers with hidden heels. God help us all!"

Melissa Akkaway, designer and Beckley Boutique owner: "I'm over the punk theme."

Christos Garkinos, Decades co-owner: "Cat ears."

Simone Harouche, stylist and Simone Camille designer: "I don't pay attention to trends."

Tommy Lei, My Belonging blogger: "On men, the granddaddy dapper look—that's gotta go. We need to look forward and embrace more futurism in today's menswear. On women, peplum. I am sure there's a special place in hell for that."

Monica Rose, stylist and designer: "Sequins! I just couldn't get into it this year."

Kaya B. Mlle Mademoiselle designer: "Anything that's too trendy, such as the '90s look and shirts tied around the waist."

Amanda Thomas, Luv Aj designer: "Bikinis. Why is everyone on Instagram in a bikini posing on the beach? I don't get it."

Sarah St. Lifer, freelance journalist: "I'm all for people wearing what they love—my idea of tacky could be another woman's version of timeless—but I have yet to see someone pull off a mullet hemline. Of course, there are a few exceptions: Rita Ora in Saint Laurent for one. But that woman can pull off just about anything!"

Jen Weinberg, Glamour West Coast editor: "Overalls. I swore I wouldn't ever go back down that road after high school, and I'm sticking to that."
