Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

From American Apparel's go-to basics to Clare Vivier's much-copied foldover clutches, it's safe to say there's no shortage of stylish merch that's made right here in LA. But when these brands are competing with fast fashion retailers like Forever 21, H&M and Topshop—where a tee can cost less than an Abe Lincoln—can you blame cash-strapped shoppers for picking the more wallet-wise option? Spotlighting the debate of ethical manufacturing vs. super-cheap style is LA filmmaker Andrew Morgan, who explores it all in his in-the-works documentary, The True Cost.

Featuring insight from experts, activists and industry insiders (including FactoryLA's Leah Garvin) alongside heart-breaking footage from the tragic Bangladesh factory disaster, the film aims to expose the real price of bargain buys and "how we got here, the damage being done, and the hope filled prospect of choosing a different future."

Inspired? Morgan's currently looking for backers of all budgets to make the full feature happen. Whether you're pitching in as little as $1 to the price of your average Zara purse or even an whopping $5K, head to the filmmaker's Kickstarter page and make the doc a reality here.
