Where Citizens of Humanity's Zio Fulcher Buys Rare Books

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Los Angeles has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around LA that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Zio Fulcher is the director of creative services for Citizens of Humanity, where she manages the brand's website and Just Like You, a series of video portraits on people the brand finds inspiring, such as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rickson Gracie. A collector of limited-edition and rare books, she loves checking out Lead Apron, an intimate, appointment-only spot in West Hollywood. While they're reluctant to provide their address, they can be reached at (310) 360-0554.

"I love to collect limited edition and rare books—from FUZI UVTPK's Ma Ligne to Gusmano Cesaretti's Street Writers—and Lead Apron is the place I go to add to my collection. The shop is by-appointment-only, so it is an intimate experience that feels less like shopping and more like exploring an art collector's personal library. The interior is beautifully designed, with paintings on the walls by the likes of Andy Warhol, Richard Prince and Barry Mcgee, and the well-curated inventory includes first editions of some of my favorite books like Observations by Richard Avedon (with comments by Truman Capote), The End of the End Game by Peter Beard, The Kids are Alright by Ryan McGinley, The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon and much more. Visit Lead Apron if you want to find something rare and unique, or if you just want to be inspired."
