Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Shaun Samson was born and raised in San Diego, studied fashion in Los Angeles and earned an MA in Fashion Menswear at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. After working with designer (and Racked friend) Jeremy Scott on four consecutive collections, he branched off to showcase his solo work during the fall/winter 2011-2012 season of London Fashion Week. His out-of-the-box approach to textiles was an instant hit in the fashion world and earned the attention of top retailers like Opening Ceremony.

Speaking of OC, they just released Samson's spring/summer 2012 offerings, which cleverly infuse men's denim shorts, oversized T-shirts and button-downs with spliced panels from authentic Mexican blankets. He tells the retailer that the range represents a "California attitude" and "references many things from grunge to the beach, surfing, urban street culture, and Mexico," which were all heavy influences during his time in SD.

Since all of these colorful pieces are done by hand and feature the designer's signature needle-punch felting, looks certainly don't come cheap: prices range from $420 to $980. If you're going for bold this summer and have the cash, shop the collection here.
