Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
A group of artists are trekking out to Yucca Valley near Joshua Tree tomorrow to set up inside of the Sky Village Swap Meet, a "dense shanty-like town of booths and stands packed with curios, desert junk, and overgrown cactus gardens." It's the 2012 edition of the Art Swap Meet, a flea market of sorts that brings together creatives both local—like Wendy Yao of Ooga Booga and photographer Max Krivitzky—and far-flung. Click here for a full list of participants.
From the 2010 Art Swap Meet press release: "The Art Swap Meet has always been an experiment in how an ephemeral, mobile marketplace works within the desert, an environment of extremes where only the fit survive. It provides a chance for its participants to test ideas, make artist direct sales, create works and experiences that might not be salable, or embrace the absurdity of setting up shop in a location where your customer may or may not show up."
If you're game for an adventure and don't mind the drive, the Swap Meet will be up and running tomorrow from 8am to 2pm at 7028 Theatre Road in Yucca.
