Los Angeles has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around LA that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Born and raised in Houston, Albert Chu is the founder of Otaat, a line of leather bags, card holders and pouches. He recently produced an exclusive, limited-edition of his Colla Card Holder for Of a Kind and is working on a new collection of small leather goods that will be out in mid-November. The designer, who studied architecture at Harvard and has worked on projects for the Beverly Hills Margiela and Mameg boutiques, likes shopping in his spare time for vintage furniture. He filled us in on his favorite spot in Van Nuys for gently-priced scores.
"Imagine Home Depot with all their seismically reinforced shelving that rises multi-stories high. But then imagine the shelves filled to the max with vintage dining chairs, side tables, sofas, lighting fixtures, rugs, and more. That's what Amsterdam Modern is like. With a long, deep warehouse space in Van Nuys, the inventory runs the gamut for the obvious to the obscure in modern furniture and homewares that the owner finds during her trips to Europe and sends back in shipping containers. What's even better is that the pieces are usually in gently-worn condition and are priced really well. I've scored a wonderful daybed, nesting tables, folding chairs (from a church, no less), and mini chairs that are perfect gifts for toddlers. It's a fun way to pass away a bit of time seeing some really interesting finds for the home, especially after they've gotten a new monster shipment."
