When GQ named Abbot Kinney the "coolest block in America," people took notice. People like real estate agents and the CEOs of big retail chains, who are keenly interested in capitalizing on the area's hip factor. So reports Apparel News' Andrew Asch, who notes that the street is now home to a a few chains including Gant Rugger, LF, Steven Alan and, as of yesterday, Lucky Brand.
The Lucky Brand store is located at 1310 Abbot Kinney. Not everyone is pleased about its presence. Writes a commenter on local blog Yo! Venice's forum:
Five years ago, Pinkberry on AK made everybody crazy, and three years later the place withered and died. Now Lucky has moved in with nearly the outrage. I've lived in Venice for nine years, a hundred yards from Abbot Kinney, and change has always been welcome and inevitable.
But with Venice and south Santa Monica being called Silicon Beach in the press, with Silver Productions and the Soho Club moving into the neighborhood, it seems like the changes now are far more ominous. I'd like to think this is just blowback from the GQ article, and if so, I'll personally ride the shark as many times as it takes, but I have a feeling it's bigger than that.As Asch reports, fellow big brands Scotch & Soda and Toms are both planning Abbot Kinney outposts—though Toms founder Blake Mycoskie does live on a boat docked close by in Marina del Rey, and his sister owns neighborhood mainstay Aviator Nation. That's gotta count for something, right?
