Babycakes Creator Erin McKenna Has a Fashion Past

Erin McKenna, who just opened a branch of her famed vegan bakery Babycakes on Larchmont, gets the Garance Doré treatment today. McKenna, we learn, was not always a vegan baker. She got her start in the fashion industry, first as an intern at Flaunt magazine and then moved up to fashion assistant.

Asked how she made the shift, McKenna said: "It was a funny transition–fashion to baking–but I found that I wasn’t fulfilled with my fashion assistant job. I would dread going to fashion shows and showrooms to see the next season’s looks. I should have been excited but I just didn’t get it. So to shake off my work-related depression, every night after work I would go home and bake." In addition to the Larchmont store, McKenna has a Babycakes Downtown on East 6th street, one in Manhattan and one in Disney World.
