Los Angeles has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around LA that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.
Shin Okuda is one of the co-owners at IKO IKO, a concept shop that focuses exclusively on high craft and design pieces. They stock “custom furniture by Waka Waka, limited run clothing and accessories, jewelry, artwork” and more, but it’s one of those places you need to venture into to really get a grasp of their mantra. While Shin Okuda’s sartorial choices may range the gamut, one thing is always stable – his white classic Nike kicks. Where does he maintain his perma-fresh footgear? The answer: Mr. Maury’s no-frills shoe emporium.
Mr. Maury's is a no frills shop and they actually wrap all their white display shoes in plastic. It's mostly basic Nike and Adidas style -- my dress code always includes white sneakers (and mostly classic Nike low-top styles). They also do shoe polishing. The shop seems like a family-run business and there is never up-selling or deal-making because their prices are already a little lower than online retailers and chains. It has a very local shoe store feeling...like the place you went when you were a kid to get a new pair of shoes for school.
Mr. Maury's is open seven days a week, 10am to 7:30pm. (323) 255-4900.
