Truth be told, we haven't read The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, but we've heard author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon on NPR a few times: she's a journalist who's been embedded around various parts of the Middle East, and she tells the stories of women facing unspeakable threat and opposition who find creative ways to pursue goals and dreams, running the risk of paying the ultimate price if they fail. The Dressmaker is the story of Kamila Sidiqi, an enterprising young Afghan who finds herself in the unlikely position of being a rising design star -- only, instead of fearing the barbs of Anna Wintour, Ms. Sidiqi's imminent threat is the Taliban.

So anyway, the book sounds amazing, and the Carolina Hererra boutique on Melrose Pace celebrated both tome and author with a party on Thursday night. The event was attended by Ms. Lemmon, Carolina Herrera's daughter Patrica Lansing, Lisa Ling, and Rachel Zoe and hubby Roger.

Of course, the beautiful gowns added another layer of festivity to the evening, and a portion of the evening's sales went to Vital Voices, an organization dedicated to female enrichment and empowerment, around the globe.
