Greenpeace's Daring Barbie Prank

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Now, here's something you don't see everyday: borderline-militant activists rappelling down the side of a building to hang a protest banner. The activists were Greenpeacers; the building Mattel headquarters in El Segundo; the protest is about Barbie packaging leading to deforestation. Via the banner, very frowny Ken doll informs Barbie that he's breaking up with her. (Um, note to Greenpeace: Ken comes in packaging, too.) Because Barbie is apparently some tree-chopping, orangutan slaughtering whore. Greenpeace spokespeople warn this is only the first step in a series of highly theatrical tactics, similar to the successful campaign Greenpeace waged against Kit Kat last year. [LAT]
