Fred Segal Sale Not Enticing Enough to Make Us Open the Wallet

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Oh, how we miss the days when the Fred Segal sale meant scoring an Alexander Wang bag for $200 or a Phillip Lim belt for $50. The Melrose location just started a 50% off sale -- it's not the big one, but still, we couldn't help feeling like there just wasn't a ton of desirable merchandise. Not that it's bad stuff; just not that exciting. There's a big cache of Alexander Wang and T by AW, including some slinky sweaters, crisp blouses, cozy knits and those weird knit-velour bras. Sorry, no main-line dresses. Also a ton of L'Agence: everything from leather shorts to silky, breezy tees.

The pickings are slightly better (at least, more interesting) upstairs in the designer section. Lots of pretty pretty dresses by Blumarine and BluGirl, Diesel Black Gold and Carven. If you're looking for work wear, they have a few nice pairs of Theyskens' Theory pants and button-downs. A few pieces of Proenza, including the unintentionally hilarious J Brand collab. (And no, no Proenza bags.)

We've heard a couple of different things about the sale: one staffer told us it would end next weekend, another said it would stay at 50%, and yet another clerk said it might hit 2/3 off, but definitely won't hit 75% off. Look through the gallery and figure out for yourself if it's worth your while.
