One of the most oft-given answers big-name designers use to answer the question of what's so alluring about doing a diffusion line is that it allows them to take risks and experiment in ways their main line just won't allow.
Seeing the new Matthew Williamson X Macy's line over the weekend makes us think that what MWilly really wants to do is design for Chico's. If ever there was a collab we wanted to love, it was this one, and in person, it's just so dowdy.
The pieces that look like they should be paper-thin, flowy and drapy are actually made from poly blends that are as stiff as a Burger King uniform. The pale denim moto pants are almost criminally fug. The scarves, while not particularly Matthew Williamson-esque, aren't too bad. And what's up with the blue leopard print, a variation of which was recently seen in the Alice by Temperley line as well as a few of the Rodarte X Target pieces?
Make no mistake about it, it all looks cute from far away. We didn't see the yellow dress, a piece for which we had very high hopes; only one maxidress, too. At least at the Beverly Center. Both pieces appear to have sold completely through online.
They seem to have a very generous supply on hand, so don't worry too much about it selling out before you get your hands on it.
