That emporium of the whimsical and arcane Spitfire Girl just opened a new store -- the original location is in Echo Park, right next door to Bobbie. They're obviously very good at picking out locations: the new Los Feliz satellite is down the street from the Alcove and right next door to the Steven Alan Outpost.
Gifts, curios, soaps and curiosities?the mix of oddball little charms, trinkets and books feels like a more sophisticated, upscale version of Wacko. Spitfire Girl even carries coffee table books by the likes of Mark Ryden and Gary Baseman. Like Wacko, Spitfire Girl is just a little bit macabre, but really super cute about it.
If you're not into quirky, they carry some really outstanding gifts and jewelry, as well. Really beautiful and fragrant handmade soaps, perfumes lotions, and they even stock a few pieces of jewelry from Bing Bang. The little seahorse charms are absolutely precious.
It's hard to pick a single favorite?we're kinda loving the etched wood prints -- look at the kitteh! They've got a quaint, retro feel to them, and the price is right, too: Big ones are $72 (the Echo Park location will be introducing lower-priced versions soon).
With Mother's Day, Father's Day, good weather, and graduation right around the corner, we predict brisk business for the store. And since there's a vacancy right next door to them, let's hope Spitfire Girl anchors a little Hillhurst Avenue shopping rebirth.
