Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Actress and model Jaime King is wildly talented, incredibly down-to-earth, has killer style, and loves to shop. In other words, she's a girl after our own heart. When she's not on set with fellow fashion fan Rachel Bilson shooting scenes for CW's hit show, Hart of Dixie, you can find her exploring the city's retail scene for unique treasures from new and known design talents.
Of course, once we found out that this Omaha-born gal was well-versed in the LA fashion game, we had to put her knowledge to the test and ask which local designers and boutiques she favors. As expected, her answers did not disappoint—she even taught us a few things!
Racked: What do you love most about living in Los Angeles?
Jaime: LA is a city with a long history of people coming from nothing and achieving dreams beyond their wildest imaginations. The weather here is obviously beautiful, and I love that I can have a lifestyle where I wake up in the morning and go on hikes with my dogs and friends, and then just hop over the hill to go to Warner Brothers studio. There, I work on the same lot that people who inspired me to be who I am today once thrived, such as Betty Davis and Grace Kelly. I love it!
Racked: Living the dream. Now, let's talk fashion. What are some of your favorite local jewelry lines?
Jaime: I love my friend Sat Hari Khalsa's line, Amrit Jewelry; I usually buy all my jewelry from her because the quality is amazing. I also found this new designer named Tracy Sylvia that makes pure gold friendship rings and necklaces. In fact, I bought each of my best friends one of her rings for the holidays! I'm also obsessed with Kate Albrecht's line, Mr. Kate. My friends gave me earrings and a bracelet from her, and I never really take them off. I even wear them on Hart of Dixie now!
Racked: What is your favorite one-stop-shop in LA?
Jaime: Jason Schwartzman's wife, Brady Cunningham, created this amazing store called TenOverSix. When I want to find something special for my friends or even for myself, it's the first place I go to. Brady and her partners have so thoughtfully curated the store, selling an eclectic mix of clothing, art, music, housewares, and gifts that you won't find anywhere else. They've also teamed up with The Future Perfect, which is one of my absolute favorite home decor stores from Brooklyn. The store also features music from Brooklyn-based record label Mexican Summer, amazing books from LA's BookSoup, lighting from Lindsey Adelman, and even Brady's own private label, which I love. Her designs are so rad!
Racked: We're big fans of TenOverSix. Where do you shop for essentials, like jeans and tees?
Jaime: I usually buy basics at the Goodwill. The one in Los Feliz (4575 Hollywood Blvd) has a great selection at affordable prices, and you can find interesting pieces there that you wouldn't normally come across at a regular boutique. When I was growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, I used to always dress myself in clothing from the Goodwill because we didn't have access to the designer items you'd see in magazines or film. It's something that stayed with me. I think everyone should explore local thrift stores and garage sales to find beautiful and unique items on a budget. I also like to shop for shoes there because you can score styles that aren't made anymore and have a sense of history to them. Plus, shoes at the Goodwill are already worn-in, which is convenient!
