The fabulousness that was Elizabeth Taylor is within reach this week in West Hollywood. From October 13 through 16, highlights from Christie's upcoming New York auctions of La Liz's goodies are viewable by Angelinos willing to shell out 20 to 50 clams. Monday's press preview at MOCA's satellite museum at the Pacific Design Center showcased the jewelry that Elizabeth's undeniable allure earned her, such as the 33-carat diamond ring Richard Burton gifted her with in 1968, and the Cartier diamond and ruby necklace, bracelet, and earrings that Mike Todd lavished on Liz in 1957 as they lounged by their pool in St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Apparently you can try on the jewelry by appointment if Christie's considers you a serious buyer (which may count us out). Check out her Oscars (not for sale, but viewable), along with three of her leather-bound scripts and two Andy Warhols. Also on view are ten of Elizabeth's outfits, both couture and ready-to-wear, including several Christian Dior gowns and the gasp-worthy piece de resistance, a silver and ivory Chanel ball gown with matching floor-length gossamer cape that she wore in London to a Royal Command Performance of The Taming of the Shrew in 1968. You can't touch the hem of her garment, but you can gaze upon it. (Story by Karin E. Baker)
