When Thousands of Dudes Design a Shoe?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

One of our favorite episodes of This American Life features a segment detailing a scientist's attempt to create the "most wanted song in the world" by using surveys from thousands of people who revealed what elements make them like a song. We thought about this when we read a recent email about a Hermosa Beach shoe company named Tweak, and their Mythical shoe launch -- these shoes were supposedly created by committee (admittedly, a very specific committee of young 'uns, mainly guys, between the ages of 15 - 25). These shoes have a guitar pick holder, a flap on the heel, and wings?which reminds us of the episode of the Simpsons where Danny DeVito lets Homer design a car, to some pretty spectacular consequences.
