The Early Bird Gets the Chanels at the Decadestwo Shoe Blowout

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The first four people in line for the Decadestwo shoe sale arrived at 4am. Hardcore. We asked the two gals at the front if either of them was looking for anything in particular, and one of them offered, "Something versatile and practical." We remember two pairs of electric-colored suede Brian Atwoods with 6" heels from the last sale; those may have been practical for someone (like Rachel Zoe).

Once inside, we actually did see a lot of shoes that might be described as practical. Although "practical" probably isn't the first word you'd use to describe low-heeled glittery Miu Miu t-straps, lemon-colored Prada wedges with a wood sole, or pointy Dior mules—"fabulous", "artsy" or "gorgeous" comes to mind way before practical.

Besides more than 300 pairs of shoes and boots from the likes of Marni, DSquared, Chloe, Balenciaga and Fendi, the store offered a 20% discount on all the other merchandise, too. We saw a couple of Chloe Paddingtons, a small, tan Balenciaga motorcycle bag, a Louis Vuitton vernis bag. The thing we found genuinely surprising was the huge (no pun intended) collection of shoes in size 10 and up. So much pretty. But we vowed a long time ago not to buy something unless it fits perfectly; and not even Foot Petals can help if a shoe is two sizes too big. (If any of you shoe-obsessed gals buy shoes that are too big and make them work, we'd love to hear from you.)

By the time the store opened, the line snaked along Melrose and wrapped around on Harper. The patient women (and occasional boyfriend, all of whom we hope were treated to a nice dinner or something to thank them for their good-natured tolerance, if not enthusiasm) were let in a few at a time, and for the most part, the event was drama-free. If only Decadestwo could do these every weekend.
