Off-Off-Off the Red Carpet Looks at the Oscars

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We live near enough a Red Line stop, so we thought it would be a fun idea to check out the madness, and the wacky looks, in the Oscar bleachers and the surrounding areas. Let us just tell you, we had NO IDEA what a cluster-eff the area would be. We got off at Hollywood and Vine, by the new W Hotel, and walked down Hollywood Blvd, which smelled a little less like urine than usual. We've never seen so many cops. And we didn't get anywhere near the bleachers: between us and them, there were two or three security checkpoints, each with a few hundred people in line. Bummer! (But then, we know people camp out for a couple of days; we just showed up at 2 in the afternoon). But we snapped a few picks of some stylish, and silly, Oscar viewers. Enjoy.
