Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
If you've ever been standing in line, looking at your cashier and suddenly been overcome with deja vu, consider that you HAVE seen them before: on the TV, in the movies, or maybe even a late-night infomercial. The Working Actor is a website, created by LA-based photographer Mark Lutzker, that explores the not-so-secret lives of those who ring up our purchases, mix our drinks, serve us our dinners, or by doing any of the other things actors do before they get their first big break. The site's allure is visual: striking pictures of pretty people in the working environment (and a few of the photos are more striking than others, like the ones of Liam Mulshine, working at the Pleasure Chest). But the stories on the site are pretty great, too. Check out the video of Amoeba cashier Jessica Schwartz telling the story about inadvertently, but vehemently, dissing a big director to his face.
