The ante has been upped considerably on the concept of the hotel gift shop. Boutique LA hotels like The Standard and the Mondrian have added retail niches filled with upscale cosmetics, clothing, accessories and toys -- the Ron Robinson popup at the Mondrian even offered $1,500 Philippe Starck loudspeakers. Not to be outdone, the SLS Hotel debuted the Regalo -- it's a "boutique without walls" concept that, thanks to the design genius of Philippe Starck himself, feels as much like a museum as it does a gift shop. Don't bother looking for People Magazine or Dramamine: Regalo is filled with super duper deluxe items from Kiki de Montparnasse, D.L. & Co., Baccarat, and Assouline, for your reading pleasure. And just in case you get to your room and think, "Wow, this sucks!" you can go down to Regalo and purchase some of Starck's Kartell designs for an instant suite makeover. Like that would EVER happen.
