Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
As you already know, Racked NY headed into a darkened screening room yesterday for a preview of the Vogue/Anna Wintour documentary The September Issue and took far too many notes.
Although the official premiere then took place last night, with Anna in all smiles and a bevy of designers walking the red carpet, the public still won't get their eyes on it until August 28 in NYC and September 11 in LA and select other cities.
To allay your curiosity, our colleagues dumped the contests of their spoiler notes after the jump. Do enjoy!
First, let's begin with a pretty comprehensive list of all the other (non-Vogue) characters that appear throughout the film, in something like supporting roles to Anna and Grace. There are: Vera Wang, Karl Lagerfeld (briefly), Stefano Pilati, Thakoon, Isabel Toledo, Oscar de la Renta, Bee Schaffer, Mario Testino, Coco Rocha, Raquel Zimmerman, Sienna Miller, Patrick Demarchelier, Si Newhouse, and even Bob, the documentary's cameraman (with whom Grace breaks the fourth wall).
We even jotted a list of brands mentioned. Ready? Carolina Herrera is first, then J Brand, K-Mart (by Anna!), Tom Ford, Prada, Calvin Klein, Jonathan Saunders, Mango, GAP, Thakoon, Isaac Mizrahi, Manolo Blahnik, Rodarte, Oscar de la Renta, Tracy Feith, Isabel Toledo, Galliano, Marchesa, Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaulthier, Ralph Lauren, Piaget, Nina Ricci and Marc Jacobs.
While it's common knowledge that Anna chugs Starbucks, we however spot her staff enjoying Jamba Juice. In one scene in the YSL studios, designers Stefano Pilati explains his collection to Anna as a Diptyque candle scents the room.
We even noted that Anna's phone (at the time) is a Motorola Razr. But perhaps the biggest product star of The September Issue is Apple, whose computers fill the Vogue offices. Even Mario Testino sports a gleaming white Macbook, and Anna seems to own the only black one.
BIG SPOILER ALERT!
The designer most featured, most championed by Anna in the movie is Thakoon Panichgul, who accepts surprise after surprise from her hand, such as the GAP white shirt collaboration deal, a cover of WWD, and placement in the hallowed September issue.
Although it's no fashion secret that Anna has been his guardian angel, Thakoon emerges as the real winner of The September Issue. He is the cute and lovable struggling talent that people find endearing. You want to fight for him, but realize it is not necessary, with Anna taking him by the hand.
It's no wonder that his designs, two years later, are to be found on First Lady Michelle Obama. We now prize all the more the Thakoon-designed GAP shirt that we found on clearance in Boston in 2007. In other words, we liked the movie.
