Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Vacation Records may be a shining, DailyCandy-fêted beacon of good vibes and indie rock credibility, but for everyone else, it's a terrible time to be a record store. Virgin has announced that it will close all of its U.S. locations by summertime, which means the Megastore at the Hollywood & Highland Center is doomed. In New York, the closing Virgin in Times Square is having a major sale, so we can probably expect something similar to take place in Hollywood this spring.
