LA Fashion Week: Kimberly Ovitz Debuts at Satine

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Show location: Satine
The skinny: The Chanel alum's Spring '09 collection defines the (admittedly overdone) haute grunge look: slouchy, spare, filled with loose cashmere tees and skinny black pants. Luckily her Fall '09 line, which was also on display, showed far more polish, finesse and imagination. We swooned over a floor-length acid-washed jersey gown, a cutout vest draped with chains, and a series of loosely-woven bamboo knits that harked back to Ovitz's New England college days
Celebs spotted: Father Michael, whose last name, according to a two-page writeup in this month's W, has nothing to do with the success of his daughter's fashion career.
The takeaway: While we're all for minimalism, it's hard to make it stand out in a crowded, cash-strapped marketplace. We initially questioned whether Ovitz's line could do it, but judging by the activity at the cash register, her tough variation on the theme seems to be winning over a few fans already.
